Dear all,

We wanted to let you know what The Open Door has been doing since lockdown started, and our plans for our reopening soon.

When we closed our physical daycare services and neighbourhood cafe in March we had little idea of the impact that coronavirus was going to have – both on our local community and across the world.

What we have been up to in lockdown:

We have adapted our services to provide the best response to support our individual members – and their families and carers – as they have had to deal with enforced isolation and loneliness.

We have provided welfare support phone calls three times a week to our Good Neighbour Club, registered daycare services and Senior Men’s Group – giving our members the chance to let us know how they are doing and just to chat. Telephone chatting is more important than it has ever been for those isolated in their own homes. If we can’t see a friendly face, we all very much appreciate a friendly voice on the line.

Where we have been asked to, we have increased these to daily calls. We have advocated on behalf of our members; organised care and cleaning services; set up the delivery of afternoon teas for our members; liaised with social care direct and local GP surgeries; and kept in touch with the families and carers of our members.

We hope that we will continue to make a difference to the well-being of our members as we transition out of lockdown and beyond. We hope that compassion, kindness, advocacy and verbal reassurance will continue to help our members and their families in the days ahead.

And what about our plans to reopen?

This will be in 3 phases:

1. We are working on reopening our neighbourhood cafe in September

2. We will reopen room spaces for the local community

3. We will reopen our daycare services – when we are allowed to do so

We will do each of the above in the safest possible way, and will keep you updated here and on our Facebook page.

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay in touch, and please feel reassured that we have your wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. We’re looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

We need your support: during these challenging times, please continue to help us keep The Open Door open. The coronavirus has had a massive negative impact on our ability to generate independent income. Every donation – whatever the size – helps us to keep delivering our services
